The Lions advanced to the semi-finals with an unbeaten record in the group stage after defeating Mahar United 3-1 in their final Group-A match of the Myanmar National League Cup 2024. Oakkar Naing, Yan Naing Oo, and Zaw Win Thein scored for Yangon, while Ella Edubat netted a penalty goal for Mahar.
Yangon’s starting lineup saw some changes, with Oakkar Naing positioned as a striker. Just four minutes into the first half, Oakkar Naing capitalized on a slow reaction from Mahar’s defense to score the opening goal. In the 25th minute, a cross from Mahar’s Htet Zaw Tun hit the hand of Hein Zayar Lin, resulting in a penalty. Ella Edubat successfully converted the penalty, equalizing the score for Mahar.
In the second half, Yangon made strategic substitutions, with Hein Zayar Min and Aung Myo Khant being replaced by Zaw Win Thein and Gideon Tetteh. Mahar United attempted to stage a comeback, but in the 66th minute, substitute Zaw Win Thein broke through the offside trap and scored Yangon’s third goal. Despite some mistakes in the remaining minutes, Yangon secured their 3-1 victory over Mahar United. However, in the 33rd minute, Oakkar Naing provided a precise cross to Yan Naing Oo, who scored to give Yangon a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
Yangon United head coach Frank Bernhardt said, “The first half what we played is OK and we controlled the game. But the second half I was not really satisfied because of some mistakes.”
With 24 points, Yangon United maintained an unbeaten record and clinched a spot in the semi-finals, where they will face the Group-D leader.
